Checking In: Santa Monica Proper
SANTA MONICA, LOS ANGELES
Santa Monica Proper
After the stellar debut of the first Proper-branded hotel in San Francisco, the brand's second venture sits on LA’s cinematic Pacific coastline, a stone’s throw from the beach and Santa Monica Pier.
Housed in two buildings in Santa Monica’s downtown core, Proper’s design draws inspiration in the tones and textures of the city’s famed coastline, with interiors by LA-based designer Kelly Wearstler — who injected a neutral colour palette — heightened by bold patterns and unique silhouettes. Supporting the local visual concept, artwork by emerging and established L.A.-based artists add an authentic and localised experience.
Accommodation at the Santa Monica Proper ranges from 325 to 925 square feet, with 271 guest-rooms and suites providing chic comfort defined by over-sized, statement headboards and an eclectic collection of vintage and mid-century modern-inspired furniture. We recommend the Deluxe Balcony King or the Landmark Garden Terrace, which offers the epitome of outdoor living with private balconies or terraces featuring superb views.
Located on the seventh floor, the hotel's showpiece is the sweeping rooftop pool and deck. The sun seeker’s paradise features poolside cabanas, a striking indoor-outdoor bistro and bar; serving Mediterranean dishes with a Cali twist alongside wall-to-wall ocean views.
Adding to the hotel’s food scene, Onda, located on the ground floor, is a joint venture by renowned chefs Jessica Koslow and Gabriela Camara. The unique collaborative concept highlights seafood of the Pacific whilst focusing on ingredients from both Mexico and the farmers markets in Los Angeles. Palma is Proper’s all-day dining venue and the perfect spot for coffee or canoodling — depending on whether your mood longs for a wellness smoothie or speciality cocktail — we recommend the ‘Aged at Sea’ in true LA-style.
For those in need of some R&R, traditional massage therapies and treatments sit alongside yoga, meditation and cooking sessions at Proper's Surya Spa, helmed by renowned Ayurvedic guru Martha Soffer.
